How to I search to find a date?

Menu/View/Find in View or Command+F.

But it doesn't work using the sidebar find, and it should.

That's funny. I missed the most obvious way to get to it! It does have a different search method than Find in View. When I entered 2018, it did bring up my records for that year though.
